About Karen
I am the daughter, grand-daughter, cousin and niece of Baptist ministers. I was raised in a Christian household, not overly religious, but where the Christian concept permeated every part of my family's life.
I didn't much question the Christian faith during my upbringing, although I knew I never wanted to be baptised. Fortunately I did manage to avoid baptism. It wasn't until I was in my early thirties that I decided to completely throw religion away in a bid to define my own belief system.
Throughout life, my existence has been stable and sensible interjected with tumultuous and terrible. I guess I'm now content with my past and accept that all things had a bearing on the person I am today. It is this person, today's confident Karen, that thinks aloud and isn't afraid to pose questions of religion, particularly where it looks hypocritical.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and Graduate Certificate in Financial Planning and is studying a Masters of Creative Writing. She is self-employed as a certified practicing accountant and auditor. Karen is a mother to four with ages ranging from 17 to 24 and loves planning holidays for the family. She is currently an executive committee member for a number of not-for-profit organisations and charities. Karen is passionate about social justice, sustainable living and politics.
“I’m concerned that, in stable Christian households, we grow up believing everything our parents tell us without questioning much. It serves us well so we accept it. How is indoctrination actually affecting us personally? What are we missing out on as a result of in-built family doctrines? ”
