God's Laws Are For Losers

I’m sorry, God but I don’t believe modern Christians really care about your rules anymore. These millennium-old laws seem to be rather superfluous to modern believers, except when it suits them to impact upon other people’s individual decisions.

Leviticus, the book of law in the bible, has many rules about how to observe religious instructions. It’s quite mystifying to me how many of these godly instructions have been ignored and dismissed by the modern Christian. It’s extremely strange for a devoted Christian to ignore them; after all, these instructions were the Old Covenant set in stone by God. Surely, they can’t just be thrown out. These are God’s laws to his followers made thousands of years ago.

Oh, a modern Christian will probably spout the New Covenant made by Jesus supersedes all previous law. That’s not what the bible depicts, though, as it says God will put his law in the minds and write them on the hearts of his people (well, really just Israel and Judah but who’s disputing genealogy?). [See Jeremiah 31:31 if you’re that way inclined.] I guess they'll claim Jesus died to set them free from the sins committed under the Old Covenant [Hebrews 9], but I don't think there's enough blood of Christ to go around if every Christian is ignoring the Old Covenant altogether.

If modern Christians are claiming their allegiance to some all-powerful judge who decides eternal damnation or otherwise, why aren’t they living up to his laws? They mustn’t be too awed by this deity if they feel free enough to pick and choose his rules to obey. It seems rather like they’re a bit lax in their dedication to the Christian cause; almost as if God’s rules don’t really matter. As though they’ve been made defunct somehow.

So, one of these rules, “…nor shall there come upon you a garment of cloth made of two kinds of stuff.”  That rules out fabric blends like linen cotton, gingham, and silk wool for Christians and that’s before we even start to contemplate the potential impacts for the synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester. These man-made cloths may only be suitable for heathens.

“You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it.” Fire up the BBQ and crank it all the way up to well-done or charcoal heat. If you’re one of those modern Christians that’s been undercooking your T-bone, you’re really risking some wrath. Woe to you.

“You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.” Woah, God even reinforced that rule by stating his lording position so he’s serious about this one. Oddly though, there’s plenty of tattooed Christians wandering around. “Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” Hmm, these laws must be those pesky types that don’t apply to today’s fashion-conscious believers.

I haven’t even started to discuss the punishments for adultery, consulting with a medium, or having sex with a woman who’s having her period! There’s way too much stoning going around in the bible. I'm pretty glad the Christians have stopped that practice.

It’s hard to believe Christians are sold out on their religious beliefs when they don’t adhere to so much of the bible. Maybe the Old Testament should simply be discarded as not being applicable to the modern life of a Christian follower. If it’s outdated and inapplicable to today, then just ignore it.

Oh, but hang on, that would mean the pro-lifers couldn’t fight against abortion based upon God’s knitting prowess in the womb. It would also stop marriage zealots preying on the LGBTQI community. On the other side though, it would mean Christians would have to be proactive in refugee protection, “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them” and be actively accepting of multi-culturalism, “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

All these rules are pretty hard to work out, I guess. The bible books are pretty ancient too so they’re probably not that reliable anymore, especially the Old Testament because it’s so, well, old. Maybe it’s time to give all the godly law stuff away anyway and just sing some loud churchy songs to profit from the music sales. Modern evangelical Christianity is merely laughable religious fervour. There’s no real conviction; just a selfish and pious mindset that one is going to live eternity with singing angels and lost loved ones in a perfect heavenly realm. To hell with the rest of us.
